Installing benching and working under Covid-19 restrictions
Ebtech Glasshouse Systems were contracted by Leeds City Council “The Arium” to provide new container benching systems in their Zone 2 growing area.
The benching system had to be substantial enough to be able to produce young trees, but also to fit in with the existing bench system, transport system, hatches, and production handling lines.
The benches were made to match the existing size of 6.0m long by 1.65m wide tables but had to be deeper with stronger supports to handle the extra weight that the young tree production would bring.
Our sister company, Ebtech Construction installed +/- 270m2 of concrete pathway to bridge the gap between the existing systems, central walkway, and work area. Removing the vertical end screen supports and then replacing them after the new concrete was laid, to enable the end screens to function as previously. The work involved having to operate around existing electrical distribution supply and control boards.
Ebtech Glasshouse Systems provided a fixed transport conveyor system line along the front of the bays with specified crossover points that linked the old system to the new one allowing both systems to interact seamlessly.
A further transport conveyor was placed at the rear of the bays, providing full control of the 174 benches from either end of the glasshouse, thus allowing for easier positioning and movement within the glasshouse space.
Following the installation of the support posts and rails, the drain gutter systems were then hung and installed connecting into the existing drainage network.
The flood benching irrigation system was installed and connected to the existing mains water supply and linked, via solenoid valves to the water control system allowing for automated water control on the flood bench trays.
Ebtech Glasshouse Systems were grateful for the help and support received from the client during the construction phase in very difficult Covid 19 restrictions & circumstances, on top of Brexit regulations hindering delivery process times on certain materials.
All in all, another very successful project completed to the satisfaction of our client.
